What is Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)?
Erectile Dysfunction aka Impotence is the condition in which a man is unable to have erection or to maintain it for long enough in order to have a satisfying sexual activity. This state is very common in the modern stressful world but the problem is that men are shy to talk about their problem thus making it even worse.
Impotence (ED,Erectile Dysfunction) is different in manner of severity; some men are totally unable to achieve an erection, others suffer from inconsistent ability to achieve an erection, and still many men can sustain only short and unsatisfactory erections. The variations in severity of impotence is the reason why estimating its frequency is very difficult. As we said before a common problem is that men are reluctant to discuss impotence issues with their doctors, and thus the condition stays undiagnosed.
Even though impotence can occur at any age, it is rather uncommon among young men and more common for the elderly. By the age of 45, most men have already experienced ED problems at least once in their life. According to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, complete erectile dysfunction increases from 5% among men 40 years of age to 15% among men 70 years and older. Population studies conducted in Holland found that some stage of impotence(erectyle discfunction) occurred in 20% of men between ages 50 to 54, and in 50% of men between ages 70 to 78. In 1999, the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey counted 1,520,000 doctor-office visits for ED. The scary part is that those numbers are rising with every year.
